Short update from VH1
Jan. 2nd, 2009 10:04 pmI'm watching VH1's top 100 Hard Rock songs. It's weird because I either LOVE the songs or I hate them and have to change the channel. It helps that they're probably using a more lax definition of hard rock than I would? Cos More Than Feeling is an AWWWWWWWESOME song but it's not that hard, is it? You Give Love a Bad Name was #20. Kashmir was 21 and Blitzkreig Bop was 25. AND BON JOVI WAS 20. O.o That is odd. And hilarious. And a testament to how irresistible Bon Jovi is. Of course, Whole Lotta Love was in the promo, so Zep will have one of the top spots. My god, Led Zeppelin are so awesome. Also the Ramones. Dang, I still don't own that Ramones DVD. For Tommy alone I should get it, I love Tommy. Tommy and the accents. And, you know, the way the Ramones are totally awesome. I can't remember where "Hot For Teacher" was but I hope Van Halen will be in this again. [For those of you keeping track at home, Running With the Devil was somewhere here in the top 20 and Whole Lotta Love was #3. Smoke On the Water was also in the top 20. Irresistible! I got really pumped when ABC was air guitaring to it. XD If you were wondering, #1 is Guns n Roses, Welcome to the Jungle.]
Man, I need to listen to more Rush.
So yeah, there's been a few songs that I just don't know - I don't listen to enough hair metal, sadly. So those are ok. But a lot of the songs are either songs or artists that I adore, or else I find it so horrible and sometimes hideous that I have to change the channel. Shock rock? Not my thing. A lot of this stuff is not my thing. I have very little middle ground when it comes to hard rock, apparently. I love when music really rocks out but I don't like a harsh, violent sound, I guess. And I don't like the image of a lot of the groups, I just don't want to look at them or hear their lyrics. And a lot of the newer groups I just find obnoxious. XD Also I like a few songs that people call metal, but in general I just never enjoy heavy metal. It once made me cry in public and not in the way music is supposed to make you cry.
Hahahaha, Twisted Sister. They're from Long Island. :D It's so funny, Dee Snider has such a thick accent. Apparently heavy metal thrives here? I would love to hear a conversation between Dee and Marky Ramone.
I'm also watching Shawshank Redemption - not simultaneously, of course. I took a break to watch the last 50 songs of this thing. I looooove Shawshank Redemption. I was saying to Katie it's basically because I'm in love with Andy Dufresne. As are we all, no? Anyway, yeah. Usually I like lighter fare but I think Shawshank Redemption is amazing.

Date: 2009-01-04 01:18 pm (UTC)Another teacher wanted to know why the original title to "Stand by Me" is "The Body." I'm surprised Stephen King is so popular over since a lot of his wordplay must get lost in translation.

Date: 2009-01-05 01:36 pm (UTC)But yes. In terms of songs that VH1's countdowns have recently introduced me to, "Pour Some Sugar On Me" is way better than "Welcome to the Jungle." The latter isn't bad but I really can only listen to Axl Rose's voice for a limited period of time. "Hungry Like the Wolf" was in the 80s countdown, right? Because it keeps popping into my head.
Joe in my icon says "Why the hell was 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' the only/top Clash song on the list???" You'd think it'd at least be London Calling?

Date: 2009-01-05 09:24 pm (UTC)I would have expected London Calling also! But as far as radio play and mainstreamness or whatever, I'm not surprised that it was 'Should I Stay or Should I Go'. I only hear that and Rock the Casbah on the radio, which I guess isn't hard rocky enough? So maybe people forget London Calling exists!
I don't know why I dislike Guns n' Roses so much. Partially it's Axl's voice. Partially it's because 'Welcome to the Jungle' just sucks, and that's all I hear. I've just never liked them, and I don't have a good reason why. XD
And you totally have different tastes from your average hard rock fan. What you have is good taste, where as the majority of people that participated on this countdown have bad taste. :D

Date: 2009-01-06 01:38 pm (UTC)Yeah, "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" and "Rock the Casbah" are probably the only two that have really hit the mainstream. Man, that entire London Calling album is so amazing. The world needs to embrace it, although I guess if they did I would feel less cool? I still think turning on the radio and hearing "I'm Not Down" would be awesome. I would probably listen to the radio more!
I certainly don't like Guns n' Roses either, it's just I never really had to deal with them at all so it was more of a "they seem annoying, I bet I wouldn't like them" than outright hatred. XD
So speaking of my good taste, I played "Hungry Like the Wolf" on youtube several times last night. Man, I need more cheesy 80s music. You should hook me up. Aww, crap, I forgot to put the new Bon Jovi songs that I bought off iTunes onto the pod last night! (i did put the Wrinkle In Time audiobook on, though!) Hey, Bon Jovi was in our press clippings email at work yesterday! XD About the Hillary thing. And he was on the news that morning in the diner where dad and I were eating, it was awesome. I adore him.
Speaking of Jon, I think it was in the hard rock thing that someone was like ". . . We all underestimated Bon Jovi." But instead of being like "And then he did so well, it was amazing!" it sounded really, really rueful. "How could we have underestimated him? And now he's TAKEN OVER THE WORLD." I've been amused thinking about that for the past couple days.
So, this is long! But I'm editing anyway because we were talking about stuff that's managed to make us cry? Shawshank Redemption made me tear up a bit but not outright cry. And I remember crying reading the Life Story of the Flash by Mark Waid. XD

Date: 2009-01-06 08:23 pm (UTC)I don't have "I'm Not Down". How sad! I'll hook you up with a crapload of cheesy 80s music if you hook me up with that. I totally saw the Bon Jovi thing on yahoo. I didn't read anything about it, just the headline that was like "Bon Jovi: I'll Be There for You, Hilary!" or something. I missed it if they said something about him on the hard rock thing. XD That sounds amazing though!
Remember when you were talking about how your mom doesn't like to say 'good job' to kids? I realized that that's as close to thank you as my dad can manage. When he opened the Christmas presents my sisters and I got for him, for every single one he was like "Good job!! Good job guys!" I guess he's been doing that our entire lives, because my sisters and I are so used to it now. XD I pointed it out to them later and they were like "HAHA WOW, that's depressing!"
The Life Story of the Flash is a good one. XD I can't think of.. OH. The end of Milk totally did, but I held it in super well. And songs make me cry sometimes!

Date: 2009-01-06 11:00 pm (UTC)I will give you as much Clash as you need! :D
Awwwww, that is sad about your dad. XD Wow. But, like, I'm a really awkward gift-receiver? So maybe he's like that? M-my mom says the "good job!" thing is a symptom of really low expectations. D:
OK, so, this icon is from that scene in Life Story of the Flash. The book is narrated from the point of view of Barry Allen's wife, Iris, as if she's writing a biography of her husband. And the scene is where Barry sacrifices his life to save the universe, so we see Barry making the face you see above and Iris is describing what he did. And then Iris says, "I'll never know what he was thinking in those last moments. . . but I hope it brought him peace." And then you see that Barry is thinking about all the happy times he had with Iris, them meeting and him proposing and their wedding, and then the last panel is just a closeup of Barry's face and he's smiling.

Date: 2009-01-06 11:15 pm (UTC)Hahaha, my dad holds extremely low expectations of all of us, so go figure! We're so used to it at this point that It's comical.
I don't blame you for crying, cause that's totally sad. D:
