OK, she won't thank me for this, but as my partner in crime she has to be mentioned - [livejournal.com profile] ayamachi and I have re-arranged and reinterpreted High School Musical songs from all three movies to make it a story about a young man's sexual awakening and struggles with his homosexuality, leading to him eventually finding the strength to face his peers and come out. We were inspired by "I Don't Dance," which I'm convinced is intentionally supposed to be about Ryan helping Chad come to terms with his fears that having gay sex (dancing) will compromise his masculinity. But then we made our gay coming of age movie about Troy because he sings some hilarious songs.

The first song is "Get'cha Head in the Game," which is, starting from the very title, FAR MORE HILARIOUS if you think of it as being about gay sex. But actually in our movie the song is early on. Troy is starting to have squishy feelings towards a boy (#23 on the basketball team, we decided, because there was no one else suitable. Since we'd paired off Chad and Ryan in "I Don't Dance" and I wanted a happy ending) but he's completely uncomfortable about it and is denying his homosexuality. So "the game" is pretending to be straight. The entire basketball team chimes in so I can only assume that in our movie they're all gay and suppressing it. Troy sings "why am I feeling so wrong? My head's in the game, but my heart's in the song." "The song," in this case, is cuddly gay feelings. By the way, the number begins with Troy shouting, "OK, Wildcats, pair up!"

In the meantime, Chad is having a similar problem, but instead of crushing on #23, who is just as closeted as the rest of the basketball team, he is crushing on Ryan, second in gayness only to Will Moseley. So he doesn't just pine and work through his feelings alone. He gets seduced! Or courted, at least. And things are going well but Chad chickens out, so they sing "I Don't Dance." Ryan, playing baseball as Chad refuses to dance, says, "If I can do this, you can do that," showing that being gay doesn't prevent one from doing manly things like baseball. "Hit it out of the park" is what Ryan wants Chad to do to him.

In the meantime, Troy is stumbling around being ashamed and uncomfortable with himself. Coach Dad, the big creeper, is clearly not someone who would raise a kid to be open-minded and comfortable with himself no matter what. He's also dumb as a post. So sort of ends up in a vague and unhealthy relationship with some slutty dude, maybe that he met in a club or something. (we're using HSM songs, we can use HSM implausibility!) And Troy is all guilt-ridden and still in love with #23 on the basketball team. Finally, they have sex in some sort of PG-13 way, portrayed while Troy is singing "Scream." I imagine it's a sort of weird fantasy sequence. The doors closing and opening at the beginning is about Troy finally deciding to take the plunge and really get into a physical relationship with a dude. The "pushing, pushing, pushing" refers to his sketchy new lover. And then on "without you" we find out that he's thinking about #23. And his high school life and how his discovery of his sexuality affects that, and how unhealthy his relationship with club guy is.

A break from Troy's drama comes in the form of a Chad/Ryan number! We've seen their relationship developing throughout, in some way, and now they're together and Chad is totally cool with it, so they sing, "Can I Have This Dance," which is a romantic song about dancing! So its' a perfect counterpoint to "I Don't Dance." :D This is the first song that we have to re-assign parts, it's a Troy/Gabriella number in the movie. Whatever!

Troy's crush on #23 is getting fleshed out, and his dissatisfaction with club guy is established. Finally Troy grows a pair and sings "Bet On It," which begins with him dumping club guy, but then most of it is about him coming to terms with his identity and coming out to his school peers.

He gets together with #23!! And they sing "Breaking Free" together or whatever the song is actually called. It's basically just a love song, but it's a good ending song, and the "breaking free" theme works nicely with the message of the movie, about being yourself and not worrying about the opinions of others. Second song in which we have to re-assign parts. XD

And that, my friends, is how the songs from the High School Musical movies can be used to craft a movie about a young man coming to terms with his sexual identity. And his cute friends getting it on. There are loads of subtle double meanings in the songs and I only got to go over some of them. XD But I assure you it is beautifully assembled.

I'm moving at work. :( I'll have to share a cubicle temporarily, which is stinky. And then we're moving into a big open area thing. A lot of people at work are arranged like this - I think it might just be legal that's closed in and I've only had my own space because I'm sitting in the legal unit. But I got really used to having my privacy and stuff. Well, I'll be really busy in the months to come so it'll be fine. It's just when I'm trying to keep myself busy that it's annoying to be observed.

Am trying to craft together what might be a really kind of awesome solution to the roommate opening, but I'm waiting to hear from people. ::bites lip::
