First off. It's not like I have any huge Kinki Kids fans on my flist, but if I did, I bet they'd be interested in this 1998 appearance on Love Love Aishiteru that Laruku did, with partial translation. :D It's still downloading, but I bet it's fab.
So, I'm really not a poetry fan. Like, really. However, certain phrases can really get to me - the phrase will get stuck in my head like a song normally would. And I really like the line from the Hollow Men, "This is how the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper." If you know me, you'll know that's so unlike me - it's not sentiment that speaks to me, but the phrasing itself, the way the words are put together. It just sits in my head well, it sounds good and feels good. It has impact. So, I guess T.S. Eliot was good for producing something other than the poems that would become CATS. XD (My first fandom, as it were.)
( on the Ramones, who are both obnoxious and adorable, but the latter only in an odd way )
Anyway, I've been thinking about masculinity in Johnny's. I tend to toss around the word manly because I like it, even though I don't really feel hugely comfortable with the way American society (and I think many societies over the world) view gender roles. So, I wish we could separate "manly" and "girly" from "male" and "female" because I love using them and think they're very descriptive, just that they shouldn't be linked to behavioral expectations based on sex. I think that's what I want to say. . . XD
Anyway!! So I'm always talking about which Johnny's are manly or not, and Yamaguchi and Okada tend to come up a lot. As well they might! But you know who I actually might call manly the most often in private? Who really strikes me as manly? It's Maru. (I think most of you will make the right assumption, but I'm referring to Maruyama, not any other marus that might be running around.) There's something really manly about him to me, and it's actually because he seems really gentle. Inocchi actually hits me the same way - I think of the two of them as two of the most manly, and it's because they're so gentle and sweet. OK, it also doesn't hurt that they have manly broad shoulders. I love Maru's body, actually. Super-manly.
So yeah. There's something about appearing kind and generous, perhaps in a quiet, non-obvious way, that makes me think of people as manly. It's been intriguing me, because masculinity is defined as aggressive to me - like, the specific social term of masculinity refers to something very different from the complimentary, positive word of "manly." But I don't think that I consider women to be manly if they have these traits. I'm not sure. Hmm. This wasn't as incisive as I would have liked. XD The main point is that I love Maru.
Other news: Finished my paper, it's in. Also turned in change of grading option form.
Sophian tonight, then I really, really need to start studying for my scary high-expectations midterm of doom on Thursday. ::whimpers:: Agh, also, I need to read about cover letters tonight because I have all sorts of Career Development Office-related activities tomorrow. O_O
I also continue to have "Oh You Pretty Things" stuck in my head a lot. I blame this on Hyde.
Oh! Addendum to previous entry about Hyde discovery, and thematically linked to this entry sort of. Right after I wrote that, I was looking into the other band members and stuff, and I found out that Sakura, the former drummer for L'Arc en Ciel, went on to form ZIGZO! Katie downloaded them totally randomly a long time ago - she's a lot more musically adventurous than me, and used to acquire all sorts of random things. And we both really, really liked ZIGZO, especially splash and World Introduction. XD I was listening to them again today, they're pretty good. It was just so, so funny to find that out. The only j-rock band I've ever listened to, and they happened to be linked to the j-rock star that I randomly get a crush on. XD It's nice to be able to put them in context!
