I had a good weekend. I had several lovely mealtime conversations, and (one might say) renewed my friendship with Carly, after barely speaking to her for a week. It was lovely--I spent several hours at brunch, talking first with some of my favorite people from my house, and then with Carly and Courtney (if I haven't mentioned her, she rocks and made me an omelette during the omelette crisis that apparently never got written about. Basically, I was craving omelettes for about a week following a failed trip into Northampton at 1:30 AM, a very cold time of night, to get omelettes. And we had an omelette party and Courtney made me a feta cheese and tomato omelette and it was incredibly tasty.). And then we were back to Carly's room to chill. And then I watched an episode of the West Wing with Corey (what is going on with these C-names?) and I've pretty much been doing homework (for Tuesday, go me!!) since then, except for dinner, and another long conversation with Courtney and Carly.
I can't remember what happened yesterday. Saturday. Uhm. . . West Wing was watched. . . oh! I looked at 70s album covers and had this Pink Floyd thing that's still throwing me off. Just the trailer to the Wall movie is creepy as all hell!!! Jeezus. But I have learned a lot and it was all really cool, and a lot of it was creepy in the way that I really like.
Oh, and I showed Corey Almost Famous (that may have been Friday. . .) and she really liked it and it makes me happy because it's an amazing, amazing movie!!
And I met my theater group at the library, where I volunteered to do 70s colors (having just watched Almost Famous--so that must have been Friday) and I have come up with brown, orange, lime green, and lavender. XD Woo!
And Corey's sleeping, so maybe I shouldn't be typing but hopefully I won't wake her up.
Anyway, the cool thing is that I have finally gotten engrossed in John Dominic Crossan's (Dom to his friends, apparently!) A Search for Paul. It's written in conjunction with an archaeologist, but the poor man, Johnathan Reed, is not friends with my professor and doesn't really get mentioned much. ;) Anyway, it's an archaeological look at the cities visted by Paul and an evaluation of his letters based on the social (I use that word in the broadest way possible) context of the cities.
And I've been having a really hard time reading it, trying to only find the parts that are specifically about the Pauline letters and skipping the parts about Roman architecture and what Corinth looks like from a distance. . . in modern times. >.>
But I started this latest section with something less than enthusiasm, and ended up really, really intrigued! It was all about different eschatological and utopian expectations of Jews and Romans of the time, and previous times. Which was hotness. I can't wait until we get to the book of Revelations in intro to bible. I hope it's as cool as I think it is.
Am I not someone who should be majoring in religion? XD (lately I've been concerned--it was the only presentation of a major that I went to, and I'm a bit worried that I was so impressed with the major because they had samosas.)
And then it got into Augustus and the imperial cult, which I'd already read about in another book and found incredibly dull and confusing (ironically, the other book was written by my professor--I'm going to go re-examine the pages) but got completely sucked in, and totally loving it. I'm a sucker for iconography. I don't know. It was just awesome. Like, the way he deified himself. And stuff. Also, I'm biased toward Augustus because of the Sandman. What was that called? Oh well. I just think he's cool. Cool. (so much so, in fact, that the word bore repeating).
I have 5-ish pages left, but I'm going to do them tomorrow. And the readings in the textbook, which are easy and usually somewhat interesting, and 30 pages in First Urban Christians, which. . . oh well. So that's not too bad!
Anyway, so, I'm totally going to get I, Claudius and Claudius the God out of the library. I'm really excited! I read a good deal of I, Claudius before, but got scared off when he and his fianceƩ or whatever were being mocked by their mothers. :( But I'm ready to give it another try--6 years later! Actually, I can't remember when I started it. But I do know that mom said I was too young (which I almost just spelled like "tongue") and I had to hide it in my underwear drawer when I wasn't reading it.
So, I also had to do readings from two commentaries of specific scriptural passages, which I had to take out of the library. And I really wanted to get them read tonight, so I had to wait until 8:30 when someone returned the books (which were on reserve). So it's dark, and cold, and luckily the library is incredibly close to my house, but you know. . . slight sketch. And I'm wearing my rocking hat from Corey, and on my way out I pass these two guys in t-shirts! And one of them says something like "how you doing" and the other says he likes my hat, to which I say "Thanks!" But then, when I went to return the books, at 10, they were still there!! And the guy said "howdy" and complimented my hat again! And then when I came out from dropping the books off he said "Have a good night." So I said "same to you." But it was all just weird. And sketchy.
Oh! But one of the commentaries used the best word EVER!!
Tetragrammaton.
OK, I've looked into it, and apparently it's pretty much exclusively used to refer to the most holy name of god, which I'm going to write and hope I don't offend anyone, Yahweh. But it's actually YHWH, so tetragrammaton is. . . "four letter word". Oh, that just rocks my socks. That there's a word for four letter word. That's not "curse". XD Eeee, it kills me! :D I want to start calling "the" a trigrammaton. And 8-letter words octagrammatons. Wooo!
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to start calling "Claudius" the octagrammaton. So wrong, but so right. Or maybe just more wrong.
And now I'm going to go and brush my teeth and go to bed. Yay!! Maybe read a bit more Dancing Bear beforehand. :)
Here's something for you to think about: what would have happened had Constantine not decided to legalize Christianity? I have placed him in the top 10 people who've had the most influence on the course of history.
