Don't worry, I'm still into TOKIO in an unnatural and excessive way. :D I was just thinking about how much I like the voices of everyone in TOKIO. It's kind of weird. Especially for a JE group. XD Maybe it's because I usually prefer a less polished sound, a Joe Strummer rather than a, say, Ohno Satoshi. I was trying to find a Western equivalent but I couldn't think of anyone quite right. XD

So, starting at the beginning - and keep in mind that this is just my impressions and I don't really have much musical knowledge. So this mostly just what I like.

Nagase. First and foremost, I love a good falsetto. See Richard Manuel, in my icon. Nagase has one of the best falsetto's I've heard. It's incredible, it's so effective, it sounds great. Love it. But I also adore his singing all the time. I think he has a voice that's quite unusual for Johnny's, it's very rock. It's strong and it sounds great without being smooth. He certainly can falter live, but somehow there's a real feeling of security with Nagase's vocals. When he's there, he is powerful. And. . . wow, weird organ music just started coming from somewhere? Possibly my downstairs neighbors? Anyway, uh. Wow, that pretty much derailed my train of thought. XD I guess something about, compared to some of JE's other good/main singers, it doesn't feel like Nagase needs to try to get his voice to do what it does. He gives more of a feeling that this is just what happens when he opens his mouth and starts belting. Like I think if I just start singing, my voice is really high, but if I concentrate, I can lower it (and it sounds much nicer). Nagase's singing voice is what it is. And it has such a distinctive sound, it's so unique and so him. And it suits TOKIO's music - or TOKIO's music suits it.

Yamaguchi. He also can rock a falsetto. XD Yamaguchi's voice doesn't have the power of Nagase's and I think he's inclined towards flatness occasionally? But I LOVE his voice. I was making a collection of clips of his solos from various songs but I got distracted. XD I'm so with Miyake Ken - it's sweet! There's such a beauty and sweetness to his voice. It's an amazing contrast to Nagase's, as well, that just works so perfectly. I love hearing him sing. I listen to his solo in Jibun no Tameni over and over and over. :D I think when he builds up and puts a lot of energy into his voice, it's so incredibly moving, somehow. Yamaguchi's voice makes me fall in love with him (even more so than usual).

Taichi. I love Taichi's little man-voice! I think it's great. I mean, it is great, he's got a good, solid singing voice. But I also think it's great that Taichi has the deepest voice and sings all the low harmonies (I am addicted to him recording Ambitious Japan - just as I'm addicted to Yamaguchi recording sugar!) when he's the tiniest little bit of fluff. But yes, Taichi can also rock me out of my chair with a good solo! And again, the contrast is fantastic. They're just so well-balanced. :D When I first heard Fantastipo I was like "whoa! can that be Taichi singing?" because I was quite a new fan and hadn't really heard many of his solos or anything. It's funny that in TOKIO a singer like Taichi is doing back-up. They have a really deep bench.

Leader. Yes, I like even Leader's voice! Unlike the three above, I don't think I'd want to hear an entire song by Leader that much, or that regularly. But he sounds so great doing back-up. Again with the blending and the contrast and the balance. :D He rocks his high harmonies. I really do love the way Leader sounds! He's a good singer. Oh, TOKIO.

Mabo. So, apparently Mabo isn't crazy about his own voice? His singing voice is fine, if a bit inconsistent. His solos on J-friends songs are adorable. But, of course, Mabo likes to describe himself as the guy who says "yeah, yeah, yeah" in Uwasa no Kissu (yay yay yay, perhaps?) and I believe that is where his true skills lie! I actually love that part of the song, especially when performed live. I hope that on the new Mabo - Higashi - Ohkura single, it's all Mabo doing little call-in shouty parts. He is awesome at them!! XD Yay, Mabo. Owning constantly.

So, yeah. I'm relaxing this afternoon - I was supposed to be hanging out with Katie but I ended up getting a ride back to Brooklyn early which actually works out quite well. The apartment is empty, which is amazing! And I can relax and go into work from here tomorrow. I'm taking advantage by playing Cadence and Reply and singing along loudly, which is what brought on this entry. It is lots and lots of fun. :D I'm also eating fruit snacks and reading smut so it's basically just an awesome afternoon all round!

EDIT: GUYS. GUYS. You all say this photo of Kamisen, right? It basically 100% broke my brain. GO. VIEW. I cannot discuss it with people who have not seen it!

I love your TOKIO posts. ^_____^

I'm with Shiina Ringo on Nagase's voice - strained is better. XD

Gussan - I love that Jibun no Tame ni solo soooooo much.&hearts He does tend to sing a bit slow at that part, though. :/

I love Taichi singing, too. I'm so full of happies right now. *will be releasing something awesome shortly* ^____^

Leader - I think he's usually concentrating on playing so hard that his voice comes out kind of weak. Also, he's busy putting on a cool look. XD I think he sings a solo song in his SCP, which I must sub some day.

lol the recordings... I went through and watched a bunch of DVD extras the other day, and I'm still happy from it.&hearts Just...Leader recording his harmony parts by himself was... AHA. XD

Ah, I forgot to mention my favorite thought on this: my family thinks Nagase's voice sounds like Weird Al's, so now I keep thinking of that when I listen to Nagase sing. XD

I love her for making him sing Amagasa high. XD Those are my favorite parts!

Eeeeee Taichi singing!! :DDD

Oh man, I think I must have Leader's SCP somewhere. . . I need to see him hold an entire song. I don't know if I can imagine it. . .

XD Recordings are so fascinating and entertaining and hilarious. :D

And, re: below - I've only heard Weird Al a couple times, I'm not sure what he sounds like. That's hilarious, though!!

Do you have some of recording extras?

Hi, I stumbled on to this post and loved what you guys said. I have recently become a Tokio fan and have been going all over the place to find more info about them. I am in love with the five guys and their awesome music!!! Do you know where I can find these DVD extras? I would love to watch them recording their songs if it's possible.

Thank you much!

Ahhhh! Thank you so much!!!! It's awesome!!! This is the most complete list I have ever seen (I was screaming for at least 10 seconds). Also, I LOVE your site. It's become one of my top ten bookmarks!!

Thank you so much!!!

(ps. for some reason, I can't seem to play the avi files that come with parts, like blahblah.avi.002. PLEASE HELP!! is there a special avi player I need to get or something?)

Thanks again!

You need to join any .001, .002 etc. parts together before you can play them. Use a program called HJSplit. It's a very simple program, so you shouldn't have any problem.^^

Wow! Thank you so much for the quick reply. I will definitely give it a shot. By the way, Just got the chance to read through your starter kit, and honestly, it was the best thing I've read about Tokio to date. I first got to know about Tokio from liking Nagase's dramas, then Tokio's music. But it wasn't until I was fishing for more stuff online and read some of the fan posts that I realized that this group was much more special than the average credit they got... The kind of stuff their fans say about them, like your post, the warmth, the love, and the amazing bond you share...it's like, for the first time of my life, I had a feeling that being a fan is quite a happy and fulfilling thing.

I guess it's this deep-rooted connection built from love and respect that the fan-singing at their 10th anniversary event can happen so naturally and that Tokio can have a fan base spanning across all age and sex barriers against the odds of being a Johnny's band.

I really love Tokio's naturalness, creativity and originality. But I have to say, most of all, I love Tokio's fans. I guess there's this because they are uniquely Tokio, their fans love them as they are, and only through this amazing support, Tokio can continue to be Tokio just the way they are. In some ways, I think this in itself is a legend, and I am glad to be a part of it.

Okay, I may be talking over my head now...but I can't help it. I am just so touched by your post ^_^

I'm really, REALLY tired (as in, my eyelids keep drooping and with a very heavy heart I've staved off reading my je_holidays fic, because I want to read it when I'm not going to miss half of the plot), so I'm making this short:

1.) One of the huge mysteries about my love for Arashi and especially for Ohno to me is that they don't actually have the kind of voices I'm usually drawn to, because normally, just like you, I really like the less-polished voices much more than the polished ones. And I totally love Nagase's voice and the sheer power there's behind it.

2.) I just saw that picture a moment ago and it made me blink at the screen for a long time. Okada! And his white briefs! And... basically, Kamisen are huge, huge dorks, though we all knew that before. XD
I have to confess, though, the picture is giving me bad thoughts about Kamisen and spanking.

Oh, and I think it's friendslocked, so sadly, people not in the V6 community won't see it, which is a pity.

My fingers are putting random commas in this text, I'm going to sign off. ^^"

1) Arashi are so mysterious because if you break it down and analyze them, they shouldn't be so amazing, but somehow they have this magic that just makes them utterly perfect and lovable. :D And I actually do like Ohno's voice (just not as much as some others) and think he does get some power and emotion behind it. So it does work, but it's not something I want to listen to for an extended period of time.

2) Katie pointed out that Okada's briefs look more like girls panties than men's tighty-whities. Just sayin'. XD But yeah, staring at the screen uncomprehendingly was pretty much my reaction too! How and when and why did this photo get taken?? XD

ALL THOUGHTS ABOUT KAMISEN AND SPANKING ARE GOOD THOUGHTS.

Yeah, it seemed like the poster was kind of nervous about sharing it and her source and stuff, so I didn't wanna just repost it willy nilly. :/ People should join the V6 community anyway. ;)

Hope you slept well! :D

Man, I love Nagase's voice too - especially because he really seems to pour himself into the singing, which is really great to see.

Yeah, it's when there's emotion behind the singing that a song can really move me. And, you know, Billy Joel can have that effect on me too so it doesn't need to be really intense, but when you can tell that the singer is really into it. :D

KAMISEEEEEEEEEN. BUUUUUUUUUUTTS. OKAAAAAAAADAAAAAAA. GLAAAAAAASSES. PAAAAAAAAAAANTIES.

This is as articulate as I can be about that picture. :D (OK, above I was slightly more articulate but I was focusing in on specific elements and not trying to comprehend it as a whole!)

I love Mabo's singing! He-he tries! And I'm fond of the way he makes fun of himself. And Yamaguchi's Sugar recording! Holy crap, the first time I saw that I couldn't stop laughing. It's rather impressive though! XD

merry christmas!! :D

OK, i'm really fond of this icon now. You win for suggesting it.

Mabo's singing is adorable, just like everything else he does. He's so. . . abashed. Or something.

And yes! Yamaguchi's sugar recording. It's ridiculous and hilarious but strangely alluring. I like that part of the song, the weird harmony thingie, better than the actual melody, I think. I always sing that part when I'm singing along. ::is singing in her head right now::

You can't blame me, that was Hellboy saying Merry Christmas. He's so overcome with Christmas spirit that he can't help himself. I am innocent and would never offer unseasonable season's greetings.

XD That's probably something my mom says. Because if you're stationary, your feet aren't going to warm up because of friction! And maybe if you put your feet up on a table or ottoman or something they get cold?

Yay! Murray is the Santa of my heart! Whatever that means. Jemaine should be an elf. Or a reindeer. Or a David Bowie reindeer.

AMAAAAAZING. HOLY CRAP. The look on Jemaine's face is so perfect. XD What is Murray holding, though? It looks like a huge knife. Like Reindeer Jemaine refuses to pull his sleigh so they're going to have venison for Christmas dinner.

Did you draw all that on? Because it looks really good.

Awww, Santa Murray is adorable. XD If homicidal.

Hahah, that's not a knife. It's a binder he was already holding- but the knife idea is much more hilarious, if not confusing and non-festive. Hmm.. maybe I'll edit that out if possible.. XD

Santa Murray still does not compare to Santa Hellboy. They could team up though! The amount of Christmas cheer they would spread would be OFF THE CHARTS!

SOOOOOOO, I'm watching the LWW commentary (except the library DVD keeps skipping - clearly I'm going to need to get this as well!) and apparently as a sort of acting exercise for a scene where Susan and Peter are disagreeing, they had Anna and Will do some improv. And Anna said "Shut up, I'm much smarter than you are!" and Anna is protesting that she was in character but everyone else (Will especially) is saying that they're very like their characters so improv will always have a touch of reality in it. And Andrew says that after that Anna was like ". . . I don't want to do improv anymore." XD IT'S AMAZING. I love Anna. Apparently her family all play cricket which does not surprise me.

Will is sneakier here, being more likable, because Peter hasn't done anything so he's had to talk about other people, or at least the filmmaking process. Some complaints about his haircut. (He did manage to slip in a comment about how he likes doing physical stuff. For the scene where they're playing cricket and Edmund breaks the window. INCREDIBLE. XD)

Skandar is incredibly entertaining because he's actually a normal teenaged boy so he has a bad attitude (sort of) and is embarrassed by anything emotional and they all have loads of fun giving him as hard a time as possible. He's getting really enthused about Edmund's middle-aged woman fur coat. He thinks it's pimp.

Georgie is so tiny, I'd forgotten. It's killing me. She's a lot cuter in this commentary than the Caspian one, too. I guess she became a tween in the time between the two movies?

Apparently Anna and Will are armpit buddies which makes me really happy - this is Katie and my term for a friend whose so close you'd let them put their hands in your armpits for warmth.

I am also 100% in favor of a Hellboy-Murray Santa Team Up!! Hellboy would get so annoyed at Murray and would grumble a lot. :D

You're totally perving on LWW Skandar now, which is way creepier than PC Skandar. He's so tiny! And like, 12 or something? .......

But holy crap they're so cute. Especially that Anna and Will are so close. ..and her improving skills. Completely amazing! XD I really want to watch the commentary now. More so the PC commentary though. I want to hear Ben talk in his normal voice!

I'm super sad cause my family got rid of the fancy channels on the TV. Namely the science channel, my favorite TV background programming ever! ;__; The history channel has been taking up my time instead, but it's totally not as good. I'm surly! And I had to get up at 7:40am to drive Tom down to the doctor today. I shouldn't complain about that though, it's just Sleepy Susan finding excuses to be mad. XD

Whoa whoa whoa! There was no perving! I perved at Anna a lot, but not at her miniscule co-stars! He's just adorb, and he persists in giving Will a hard time about everything which is hilarious.

Apparently Will had to repeat his final year of high school (because of filming, but she was filming too!) whereas Anna is at Oxford. XD Yay.

Both commentaries definitely have a few moments where I wished they were more comfortable interrupting Georgie. She's a pill. It's more excusable on the LWW commentary but just as annoying.

Oh no! Not the fancy channels! Now how can you watch Ninja Warrior? D:

As far as I know, the actors are in the same age order as in the books - just more spread out. Peter, Susan, Edmund, Lucy. But, let's see. William was born in 1987 and I think Georgie was born in 1995, so. . . 8 years? Whereas in the book they give the impression of more of a 4-5 year difference.

Uuuuuugh dentists and also ugh rescheduling. D: Hope all went well!

I guess all TOKIO fans think alike? I was just thinking about TOKIO's respective position in the band the other day and decided to post something similar on my LJ (^_^). I love Gusan's voice and especially so when he does slow ballads, his 'Baby Blue' just melts my heart (^_^). Mabo is so self-mocking of his own singing ability, and for someone who is always so confident and almighty (^_~) about everything else he does, I find this pretty amusing (^_^). But Mabo is Mabo, and whatever he lacks (so he thinks!), he compensates them in other departments, and magically done (^_^)

Yaaaaay! When people agree like this, I like to tell myself it's because we're so 100% correct in our opinions. ;)

And yes, indeed, Mabo will always win at life no matter what he does or how he sings. I agree - the fact that he's embarrassed and self-conscious about his singing ability, in contrast to his usual confidence, makes him even more adorable and lovable and awesome!
