yep. I'm not sure what adapter is. possibly after it was translated he adjusted it to fit better and to flow better in english? Whichever, I'm just really glad he was involved--not only because he probably helped make it so good, but because I probably wouldn't have watched it otherwise.

Basically what his job was included taking the literal translation and making it flow better, make a little more sense to English audiences, and yet keep to what Miyazaki intended. Not to mention making the lines fit the mouth movements (general length) and such since Americans are all obsessed with that ;) The website used to have a lot of detailed information when I wrote my review of it for the school paper, but I don't know if that's even still up.

I've yet to see it.

The Region 1 (American) DVD has two subtitle tracks. The translation, and the "dubtitle" - i.e. Neil Gaiman's script - for Hard of Hearing when watching the Dub track.

Sadly, the Regio 2 (Brit) version only has the Dubtitle, despite also having the Japanese dialogue track. SO dpesite being able to pick up Mononoke at my local shops, I'm having to wait until I can afford to splash out on an Import.

Sorry, I've been in a discussion about how the most surefire way to convince people anime's good is to show 'em Mononoke (or Cowboy Bebop or Trigun XD) and even if you're not attempting to convert someone, it holds true that everyone who's seen this movie is completely flabbergasted by it. :D

None of my friends or flatmates (apart from Louise) thought that much of Trigun/Bebop, but they seemed to like this film. I think it's just the film coupled with Neil Gaiman being *God* at translation of myth and fantasy....

yes, absolutely. if anything else, it'll help to get rid of stereotypes against anime. It might not help get them addicted because it's so atypical, but at least they'll know that not all anime is the crazy wack-job stuff ;)

I mean, on the featurette thing someone said that you forget you're watching an animated film, you know? so cool. the only thing that gives it away is that they have to talk fast to keep up with the Japanese lips ;)

Is a very good movie, but from what I've heard, not actually the best that Miyazaki put out, but *raises hands* I've only seen Grave of the Fireflies when it comes to Studio Ghibli's other work.

I was really proud of them for actually putting out a quality dub, that is if you plug your ears when Claire Danes talks ; )

I don't neccesarily think it's a way to introduce people to anime though, because it is very much in the vein of a Miyazaki film which is something that a hard core American audience just doesn't quite understand enough to embrace. People who like foreign films or indie films could easily set aside their standard expectations for it, but the standard American? It's better to show them something more suited to their personal tastes. I keep telling people that anime is NOT it's own genre, it's just a type of foreign film. It's like saying that American Film is a genre, when you put Face/Off next to Ghost Dog and that's just not right.

BUT, Mononoke is good for one thing, and that is saying "Don't assume anime just means magical girls and fighting you dope."

Although, I like the magical girls and fighting ; )
