bethpage and family visiting
May. 29th, 2006 01:25 amhoo. I'm trying to calm down after my rant. I actually did leave a comment on that guys image, a really long one, asking him why he came back and all that.
Anyway, it's been a nice couple days. Yesterday I went to Old Bethpage Village Restoration, and had a really great time! I got a slight sunburn on the back of my neck, but it's just a little bit sore now. I was in Benjamin, which I seem to be in all the time now. I did a really great job interpreting, I think! It got sort of crazy towards the end of the day, but not too bad, and I was mostly just doing small groups, which are good. And most people were pretty interested, and there were only a couple of out of control kids. The nice thing about Benjamin House is that it isn't that hard to make it interesting. The first bedroom belonged to a woman who the Benjamin family allowed to live with them for 65 cents a week, the second bedroom belonged an aunt that Mr. B inherited with the house, and the third bedroom is the master bedroom--which is pretty much just big enough for the bed and a dresser. So those always sort of get a rise out of people, I can tell they're sort of engagegd. And then in the kitchen we do wool carding, so the kids get to do something hands on and take some wool away with them. So it's a sort of fun house for the guests.
And it's also an easy house to get a rhythm going, it's easy to get a nice sort of spiel for the guests.
Although, I say it's a fun house but there was actually one little girl who turned to her dad a little after I was done talking and just letting them check out the rooms, and said "It's so boring, dad! it's just boring!!" I was like ". . . oops?"
But a lot of the kids enjoyed it. I had a pair that were about 12 who came by, and were really great. Cos I'm not great with kids, but I actually managed to chat with these two for a little while. They were on their own, and they said there parents were with the horses. I thought they meant looking at some horses. But it turned out that because of memorial day weekend, we had events at the fairgrounds, and that included horses and buggies, and their parents were some of the buggy drivers. I saw one of the girls riding a little buggy (or something, probably had a special name) later, and I was like "oooooh!" Anyway, it was neat. They were good kids.
It was also a very nice day, especially in the morning. In the afternoon it got hot, but that's ok. My bun wa shurting my head, though! I had it up, so that I could fit it in the bonnet, which requires bobby pins and everything--I almost never use bobby pins. So it was really heavy on the back of my head. I have a lot of hair, and it's always sorta heavy, but having it up all day was really sorta ouchie. But it was fine. And mom was with me in the afternoon, which was nice. I was with a very nice girl in the morning. She's been at Bethpage for ever. I mean, it's been 6 years since I started, but she was doing it for years back then. She recently got married. And she also did a study abroad in London, so she was giving me studying in England tips.
Anyway, it was a great deal of fun, and I'm really glad I did it. So were our supervisors--mom hadn't signed us up because she wasn't sure if we were going to be going, so we were a pleasant surprise, and helped them keep at least one more building open than they would have had otherwise. :)
I miss going there on weekends during the school year, which I did my senior year. It was usually not that busy, no school groups or anything, so it was nice and quiet. And I sometimes got to be in a greater variety of houses. Lately I've just been in Benjamin, last couple times I've done it. Or Kirby, which is right across the street from Benjamin. Also, it's neat being there during cold weather. Usually the people my age just do summers, and it's very nice and crisp and good smelling during colder weather.
And today we went to my aunt's house for dinner, because her daughter was home from Japan for a little while. Ariel, my oldest cousin. She's apparently moving back to the US in October! I think she's been living in Japan for at least 10 years or something. Not quite as long as I can remember, but a long time. Maybe 7 years. 7-10 years, let's say. Anyway, she has a very nice boyfriend who's living here and he's happy she's coming back. He's sorta cool, he's from, like. . . Hong Kong by way of Australia by way of England. Which is interesting. He also seems like a nice guy. A little swanky for our family--but he'll get used to us! I felt a little bad--he picked up a knife and fork to eat his corn on the cob (which was sooo good, by the way! really sweet!) and Ariel and some of our other family members started giving him a really hard time! Ariel's dad, my uncle, got up to get him little corn holder things, but he started using his hands, so it was ok.
And dessert was fantastic! I had strawberries with whipped cream, two types of pound cake, lemon curd, and a brownie. And there were blueberries (which I don't like) and lime curd, and two types of cookies that I didn't manage to eat.
Mmmmm. Soooo good!
Also, I just read DC: The New Frontier, by Darwyn Cooke and Dave Stewart--two of my favorite artists in the biz! I love Cooke's art! I really enjoyed his work on Catwoman, which I'm now going to have to reread. And I loved Stewart's colors on Hellboy!! And the story was really neat. Very sweet. A little too sad for me. I mean, I don't like Marvel cos I don't like the public response to the superheroes. So to have Barry be attacked by the police--even though they had some guy saying "wait, what?" is a little sad for me. And J'onn locked up, all that. But it was still a really great, sweet story. Really awesome. A little heavy on the Challengers of the Unknown and Hal Jordan for my tastes. But I would recommend it without reservation. Really great. Well-written, exciting, moving, intriguing. And it's interesting, it fills in the gaps left between the JSA and the JLA--you know, between the golden age and the silver age. Which is an interesting thing to do right before or during (I'm not sure of publication dates) the whole Infinite Crisis re-do of the Earth 1/2 Crisis on Infinite Earths thing, you know? Just a thought.
so that's what's up. and now it's almost two and I should probably head to bed.
