touch it in the back
Sep. 23rd, 2005 11:01 pmhaha! I actually did some work on my room today! It's been taking me forever to get it set up. Because I've been too busy doing fun things!!
Like yesterday--which was Mountain Day!!
For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, Mountain Day is an unscheduled fall holiday at Smith. One day in fall, the president of the college chooses a day to be Mountain Day, and we find out the morning of, because they ring bells, and people get excited and yell and run around. And then go back to sleep. Except I always miss the bell-ringing and wake up at my normal time confused. When I say "always" i mean "all two times". But, anyway. Then we're supposed to go outside and enjoy weather and stuff like that. Most of the houses go apple-picking and it's just totally awesome.
Yesterday was mountain day and I just had the most fantastic day. Like, yay! :D That was a strange thing to say. Anyway, we all thought Wednesday was going to be Mountain Day and it obviously wasn't, so Thursday was a nice surprise. Carly was online, so I asked her if she wanted to go to breakfast, and she was just about to ask me the same thing, so we went! And Courtney thought she had to work, but it turned out she didn't, so Carly told her that we were meeting in front of my house to go to breakfast. And I go out the back door and circle around to the front, and there she is, lurking on the front porch.
Anyways, we went to breakfast at this awesome little place in town that I love! And Courtney wanted me to explain human existence according to the Bible for her. So I did, on napkins. It was so much fun. And stimulating. XD
So, as you can imagine, summarizing the Bible and its view of God's plan and the way in which Christianity relates to Judaism (and the New Testament to the Old) took a while. So by the time we were finished, it was past the time when my house was supposed to meet to go apple picking. I had intended to go apple picking with them, because I like my house and haven't spent much time with them, but I ended up spending the entire day with Courtney and Carly which was probably too much fun to be legal. It was like, as close to a perfect day as you can get.
Having missed the apple picking, we decided to go to Dynamite Records, one of the most awesome stores known to man. I love going there! I bought a Chuck Berry Album for 53 cents!!! Also, on an earlier visit, I bought the Basement Tapes!! SO cool!! They're amazing. Like, holy crap. I'm listening to Yazoo Street Scandal now and it kicks so much ass. (I got it on CD so I could listen to it all the time!) And at another store, Courtney and I bought a 3 disc set of Sun Record songs. Which we've been learning about in our history of rock and roll class, so it was awesome and exciting. And those are really good and really cool, too! It's exactly what we talked about in class this week. Crazy awesome. And I got a Yes album that I've been meaning to get (the LP, so if it's good I'll get the CD). Carly found it for me, yay Carly! But only the Chuck Berry was on Mountain Day, everything else was the night before. Also, at Dynamite on Mountain Day (it was Carly and Courtney's first trip, I was so happy to be able to introduce them to the wonder) I found (sort of) Carly a Jack Kerouac poster, which she's been looking for! So that was exciting. She also got 4 albums. . . Simon & Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin and, uh, one other. . . Jimi Hendrix, or Woodstock or something.
So, right. After we finished at the record store we decided we should go for a hike and a picnic. So we went to Tyler and made sandwiches and then stopped at everyone's room to gather our stuff. We didn't really have a destination, but as we were driving we passed a state park with a sign for the "rail trail" so we said "why not!" Unfortunately, the Rail Trail didn't really have any picnic places. And Carly had a stomach pain, so we ended up just sitting by the side of the trail to have our picnic. It was kind of hilarious, because the trail ran right behind a row of houses at that point, so we were staring into someone's backyard. It would have been sooo funny if they'd decided they wanted to sit in their backyard.
So yeah, good times.
Then we headed back and went to a park, where I sketched Courtney. It turned out pretty damn good, if I do say so myself. And we talked, and it was awesome. I made Courtney tell us about her family, and then she asked me about my parents, which was fun. Cos (and maybe this is just childlike naivete, but I don't think so) my parents really, really love each other. :) So that was fun. And I really love them.
Anyways, the park was absolutely lovely and the weather was lovely. When it started to get dark and cold, we went to a diner that Courtney and I have been wanting to go to. I think we're both in diner withdrawl (cos she's from New Jersey). Of course, here in New England all the diners try to look like quaint, fifties-style family places, which amuses me no end. And they're small. So, yeah, diner, good times! We got an order of fries, and order of baked stuffed mushroom caps (yummy) and three slices of pie--apple, pecan, and pumpking. I didn't even suggest them all and that's exactly the combination I wanted to get. So, the whole meal was incredibly tasty and fun and irresponsible. Which makes things taste better.
Then we were going to watch a movie, but we stalled in Carly's room for hours! We filled out one of those "Friend" books where you talk about your likes and your dislikes--it was so horribly juvenile and girly (there was a section where you could give awards to your friends. One of them, literally, was "Best Hair on a Bad Day".) and we were waaaay too amused filling it out. Then we talked about sex for a while, and then the presence or non-presence of God (or a higher power) and the implications thereof, and death, and the implications thereof. Good times.
Then we decided it was time to watch the movie. We took it back to my room, so I could do my german homework while we watched it, but then we got all the way up to the fourth floor only to discover that the movie was not in its box. So Carly went back to her room to get it (on the fourth floor of her house) and also got popcorn. It was about midnight by this point. We watched Down With Love, and it was, if not a really good movie, incredibly fun to watch. Just, not even entertaining as a movie (although it was) but just really enjoyable to watch--the people, all that. I could watch it with the sound off and enjoy it almost as much.
So, yes, good times.
Then we all went to sleep. I got into bed at 2:30.
And was reeeeeeeeeeally tired today. Holy carp. I was tired and hungry in German, and then I ate applesauce and talked to katie instead of taking a nap then--because instead of religion class at 11 I had a special lunch and lecture thing at 11:45. But, no nap. However, the woman giving the lecture did compliment my note-taking skillz!! Cos she said this whole slew of Biblical passages, and then apparently noticed and was impressed with the fact that I got them all down. She pointed to me and was like "that girl's with me! If you didn't get those, you can ask me later--or ask that girl!" And everyone turned around and looked at me. Oh yeah. Fastest pen in the west. ;) (Yeah, I'm sort of disproportionately proud about that. lol.)
Anyways, after the lecture I had to go straight to work. And it was quite busy and quite confusing, because a lot of treasurers thought this was their last chance to use last year's money. But I think now I've figured out how to use the adding machines!! I ROCK!
Also, I rock because I ended up staying an hour later than I'm supposed to. Oh, man. That was my other potential nap time. ::sigh:: But the girl who was supposed to come after me couldn't show, and the head teller asked if I could stay and close everything up, and she totally wasn't making me, but I did anyway! (I had to tell you guys that she would have let me go so I sound like an even better person--but when you put effort into making yourself look like a good person it ruins the effect somewhat.) Anyway, I stayed for the last hour, and did all this final counting of deposits and putting it in the safe and all that. And I wasn't even sure how to do that, so luckily the head teller stopped by right at the end and was able to set me straight. But she said I did pretty good.
So, definite positive side effect (apart from extra money from extra hour of work)--head teller doesn't think I'm an incompetent moron! I kept having to ask her all these questions all day. And sometimes it was like "she expects it, we just started and this is hard," and she was always nice about it, but sometimes it was like "argh, I should be able to figure this out and she's so busy and I'm being a pain". Other positive side effect--I seem not-lazy! Yay!! So, good things.
And then I went to big sis/little sis tea, and met my little sister who seems very sweet but not that interested in talking to me. . . and then I made myself a faceboard and then I chatted with people which was much fun. Then I went to dinner, which took all of 10 minutes, and then I took a nap, and then I worked on my room!! WOOO! It's getting there. Finally.
so, yeah. now I'm chatting with carly and a little with courtney. and debating having some oreos with peanut butter and putting on a long sleeved shirt.
I need to buy a new belt, my old one is too small on me. And I didn't realize cos I haven't used it in a long time, but I need one with my new jeans. But, yay for growing!!! :D
Also, I killed a bug that was buzzing around my room bothering me. Accomplishments!
On a more serious note, I really like having friends that I feel secure about the fact that they like me. It's totally awesome.
oh, on a related note, the subject of the entry. That is something that a friend of my brother's used to say in a very funny voice. He was doing this character that he made up named Saul Rosenberg. And Saul called a pet store to ask them about his parrot, and thought he heard the pet store telling him to touch the parrot in the back, and says "I think he wants me to toch it--toch it in the bahck!" And I can't even remember why, but I did Saul for Carly and Courtney the other day, and they think it's the most hilarious thing they've ever heard. And tehy're always asking me to say it and it just invariably cracks them up--and their cracking up cracks me up. So it's good times.

That is so weird! Hollins has a tradition called Tinker Day that sounds exactly the same EXCEPT it's in October, and instead of just going back to sleep the president of the college leads a big hike up Tinker Mountain, which is behind the school. We call it Tinker Day. Everybody dresses up all goofy and stuff.
I did it once, to say I did it. After that I got up for the Krispy Kremes (traditional Tinker Day breakfast) and then went back to bed.

I'm glad you had a fun Mountain Day. Enjoy them while you can, because before you know it, they're gone, and you're in class and handing in PAPERS on Mountain Day. It's depressing. :/ *sniff*
Oh, and CONGRATS on killing the bug! Because, umm, I can remember some issues with that before ;).

lol--I'd forgotten about the other bug killing excitement! Hey, we did it, though! This wasn't a yellow jacket, just a fly. XD (Actually, on Mountain Day I was wearing the shirts that Corey and I had made to commemorate our time as roommates, and the whole yellow jacket killing incident is on it!!)
