I'm really happy that the US chose Bill Demong to carry the flag in the closing ceremony. I think that's a good story to celebrate - I've been really proud of the nordic combined kids.
And Joannie looks beautiful carrying the flag, and adorable in the Canada hat. I keep looking at the google latest results for her and I get to see loads of tweets embracing her - just an outpouring of admiration and sympathy and positive emotion. (Speaking of emotion, I sobbed pretty heavily for Nodar Kumaritashvili. I don't think I had before so for me, at least, I felt a bit of release there. It was such a somber part of an Olympics that I enjoyed so much, I felt like I really owed it to him to grieve and fully process his death and not just move on and try to ignore it. Which is what I'm about to do now in this entry:)
And Shen and Zhao looked so cute and happy carrying their flag! Even though we only saw them because they were showing the Chilean flagbearer, so it was a very mixed feelings moment.
NBC showed a little montage of Canadian gold medals a while ago, which was really cute and classy of them! Even though there were several shots of Tessa and Scott, the one that got me the most excited and pumped up was actually curler John Morris jumping into the arms of teammate Ben Hebert. Oh my god, do I love curling. I stayed up til 3 AM last night watching curling videos.
I loved the joking about the fourth arm of the torch, by the way! That was a good note to start the ceremonies with and I think really covered the initial snafu nicely.
Way to go Olympic athletes! I am in awe of all of them.
Way to go adorable Canada moose sweaters. YEAH CHERYL BERNARD!! :D Haha I'm having such a hard time finding Canadian athletes but Cheryl got a close up. And there's Clara Hughes, who I adore now. :D Also really happy to see Ryan Miller looking so happy!! I felt so bad for him after the US/Canada hockey game, even though he did a great job and should be really proud. And it's nice to see so many athletes go over to take a picture with Joannie, hopefully she's happy about it too - I'm just glad that she doesn't have to stand there by herself, you know? I did see the flag-bearer next to her say something that looked like congratulations of some sort earlier on.
YEAH MEN'S CURLING TEAM!! Hahahaha you could only really see Kevin Martin clearly, but you could tell that the three guys he was walking with were the team. They were all excited and cuddly. Wow, I am so pumped about those guys. I love them! Katie is thinking of subscribing to a curling TV website, which is awesome, but what if I can't find enough Team Kevin Martin?
I love these Vancouver Games. I must go to Vancouver. It's so far away, though. Also, poor Russia. I was happy to see records get overturned in the figure skating, to see the one-country domination come to an end, but it's too bad that the overall performance was so below expectations right before their own winter games. Now Russia will get to be just as neurotic about hometown performance as Canada was this time. O_O (Which, by the way, thanks - even from here it caused me stress and distress! Thank god for week 2.) Yeah, it's too bad that Russia doesn't have much to celebrate during this pass to Sochi. :/ Canada actually had a record performance in Torino - now broken! - although 5 of their 24 medals were thanks to Cindy Klassen, a speedskater. Pretty sweet!
I've almost learned the words of O Canada, but I do not think I will end the Sochi games knowing the Russian national anthem.
. . . That was a random little replay of Tessa and Scott's gold medal free dance. Not that I'm complaining! More Tessa and Scott! Virtue/Moir for everyone!
I also like the Sochi Russian party presentation. Dudes in furry hats getting into bobsleds, let's be honest, this is what the Winter Olympic Games are all about. "Cultural sophistication of Russia, represented by the ballet and the symphony". . . and apparently people trapped in bouncy hamster balls. The symphony part of that was actually a little frightening.
. . Ooh, Russian ice dance gold medalists from Torino. AWKWARD. Was NBC showing Tessa and Scott just to embarrass them? The announcer dude that's not Bob Costas obviously not paying great attention, because he mentioned Plushenko and not the actual ice dance competition. Oh well, Plushenko's silver is a moment I don't mind being reminded of.
Ah, I see, we're showing some gold medal victories. I can't figure out how I feel about Shaun White. He's interesting, at least. I like that. Although, and I know snowboarders have their own culture, but it does kind of amaze me that people still actually say "stoked". Are they saying it ironically? Could be, could be. [Wait, were Virtue/Moir and Shaun White the only little gold medal things they had during that? Or did I miss some?]
"Athletes of the world, you promised you would play fair, and you did". . . except maybe for some of the short track speedskaters, we can't tell what the heck you're doing. XD No, but I totally agree with his sentiments about inspiring people - and about us feeling the ups and downs with them, oh my god. I'm not in any way an athlete and I'm still so inspired by the Olympics. Obviously. Or, well, moved, at least, if not inspired. I feel like being inspired would require me actually doing something. All I did was get very upset sometimes and very happy others - but really really upset, and really really happy!
Awwwww Alexandre Bilodeau! Chit-chatting through the speeches, still so adorable.
Hehehe English-speaking Canadians speaking French, also adorable.
Costas doing a fake simultaneous translation of Rogge's speech is strangely entertaining. YEEEAH PARALYMPICS! Thank god I only have to wait two weeks. I hope we see a lot of wheelchair curling, because curling is going to be so thin on the ground! Not sure, though, because they're only being broadcast on Universal Sports, and I don't even know how much. :/
::sigh::
Vancouver 2010 games declared closed.
I'm so sad.
At least there's Neil Young.
Awwww yeah Shatner!! Shatner knew I was feeling so sad about the Vancouver Games ending and he came out to cheer me up!!
By the way, American athletes, to me at least, seemed to have a great attitude towards their host country. I saw several of them carrying Canadian flags and stuff, they seemed to really embrace it. So, so nice! And I think Canada returned it with the chanting "USA" at the women's hockey game. Not a lot of goodwill between nations at the men's final, but that's ok. Is it US athletes who have the moose horns? Or Canadians? Or everyone? Either way, I want one of them - but not as much as I want a hat in the shape of a curling stone.
Hahaha curling jokes yay. :D (That was in the event, I was totally serious about wanting a hat. If only I was watching the Canadian broadcast, maybe we woulda gotten a Kevin reaction shot.)
All the athletes who don't speak English are just confused and bored through this entire segment. Possibly the entire ceremony.
Michael J Fox!! Everyone is excited about Michael J Fox!! :D :D :D :D OMG he's wearing glasses, so cute. He had such a Canadian accent saying "sorry" - and I'm not just saying that because of the sorry joke segment. Awwww, he just told all the athletes that they're Canadian! :D YAY! I wish I was an athlete now. Hahaha, all the athletes are Canadian so all the medals were won by Canadians. XDD Very cute!
Ahaha, Hockey Night in Canada theme!!
Where are the massive curlers in this Canada parade? ::crosses arms::
"And the always enjoyable Giant Inflatable Beaver." Costas, I cannot argue with you.
Now, Giant Inflatable Curler?
No?
Haha I love the little loggers anyway.
Best parade ever. I love camp.
This Olympics has been just so great for me, because I really do love Canada - and I don't mean that in a patronizing way, if there's any risk of it coming across like that. I mean I like Canada and Canadian culture the same way some people love Japan and Japanese culture. And I really do love the Olympics, obviously. I get fully sucked into all the human and athletic drama, and I like Olympic sports better than I like the sports that get broadcast normally. And I started rooting for Canadian athletes in Beijing anyway and using the Canadian website (then CBC, now CTV. . . I miss you CBC) for most of my web coverage, so I got to feel a little more a part of the hometown celebration aspect. From Brooklyn.
So thank you, VANOC, for ending the games on a light and pretty hilarious note, because I'm genuinely sad about the games being over!
What a games, though. My goodness. Gold for Tessa and Scott, gold for Kevin Martin, gold for both hockey teams. Bronze for Joannie, new record for Canadian medals, new record for golds at a Winter Games. Amazing performances by athletes, lots of amazing new Olympic heroes.
I will do the only thing i can do, now: watch more curling.
And Joannie looks beautiful carrying the flag, and adorable in the Canada hat. I keep looking at the google latest results for her and I get to see loads of tweets embracing her - just an outpouring of admiration and sympathy and positive emotion.
