Scream meme?
academons - !!!!!! I loooooved Academons. That was what we, um, called our trivia team in high school. We competed in regional Quiz Bowl and the It's Academic! competition and occasionally the Long Island Challenge. I'm never confident enough to buzz in, but when I did it was terribly satisfying. And I looove practices. The adviser was a horrible sketchy old Jewish man, which meant sophomore year Katie and I were the only girls - pretty much junior year too. And all the other members were nerdy Jewish boys, pretty much, and it was incredibly fun. Katie is still dating the team captain. By senior year all our jew-boys had graduated and it was less fun, but the first two years were awesome. Here is an episode of classic guingel where I'm all happy about a fun day of academic competitions. In case you didn't already know I was a HUGE NERD.
pippi longstocking dub - BEST MOVIE EVER. Apparently there were some American Pippi Longstocking movies? That I don't give a fuck about? BECAUSE THE DUBBED SWEDISH ONE OWNS. All of them, actually. There must be at least three. We just got to watch the first one the other week and it was STILL AWESOME. The movies are already cool (apparently they were a Swedish tv series adapted to movies for the US audiences) cos they're filmed in 1969 in Sweden and all the candy and scenery and everything is AWESOME. And the plots and characters. But then they're dubbed in the most ridiculous fashion possible and it is endlessly and unbearably entertaining. She makes cookies all over her floor and then cuts them out into awesome shapes and there are cookies everywhere!! I am not sure which one that's in, though. Also they build a plane out of trash and they're all "Those cardboard boxes will be the fuselage!" And Annika appears to have several personality disorders and I love her.
pygmy hippos for congressmen - this was. . . a plan Katie and I came up with? We found out that pygmy hippos are small enough to be kept in pools as pets, although they're very ill-tempered. And we thought it would be a good idea to have this as a perk for Congressmen? Use the Congressional gym, get a pygmy hippo. I used to have a photo of a chalk drawing Katie did illustrating this concept but I can't find it.
salé and pelletier - my favorite pairs skating team! I love Gordeeva and Grinkov, but Salé and Pelletier are just such good performers! And they're both so personable and charming and lovable. They were great helping Mary Carillo and Scott Hamilton host that Olympic Ice show, I loved that thing.
xander/lindsey - for some reason this is a buffy pairing that I got particularly attached to. Which is rare for me with pairings, period. I love both characters, and I think I just found that even though they never interacted at all, neither were ever on each other's series, even, it seemed that whenever they were written in fanfic the authors gave them a dynamic that I really enjoyed. It was sexy stuffs. It brought out the parts I loved about both characters - Xander's sweetness and Lindsey's badassery - without exaggerating either or filling things up with angst, whether it be "I'm so insecure" or "I'm so evil." They were just "Let's have hot sex and good times!"
neverending story - I love this book. I also actually love the movie, and that is because I saw it before I'd read the book, at the library, when I was very young. So it was all dark and the movie was so amazing and the Childlike Empress was so pretty, and then I just had these vague memories of awesomeness happening. And then I read the book many years later and I love it. I love the different colored text, I love Atreyu, I love it. Especially the first half - I reread it earlier this year and found that because Bastian wishes all these magical changes upon himself, he becomes unrecognizable and I felt less invested. I don't like magical changes to personalities.
macs - XD A lot of these interests are like, some of the earlier things I had as interests and then I got attached to them. I've always been a mac user and I love them, but I don't. . . spend time thinking about them specifically. But like, my dad's been a mac user since forever, and does some consulting and teaches this "beginners" class for mac users. So I put macs as an interest, probably when I first set up LJ. XD I don't know if I would call it an interest now! I might have felt more gung ho back then.
SO! I found out about my raise today! If I did my math right, which is not a guarantee but I did check with an online percentage calculator and we agreed, then I got a 14% raise! It is SEXY and exciting and I'll be taking home a hefty chunk more each month - maybe $100 more with each (biweekly) paycheck? I'm not quite sure when it went into effect. And I will be raking in the overtime pay too! Also, I got a nice little letter saying it was a "merit increase" and only given to people who deserve it. ;)
Also former!roommate!Corey bought me birthday pie. :D And we ate borscht! Which is her nickname! But neither of us had ever had it. It was okay, actually, especially when you consider how much I hate beets! And it was completely different from what either of us were expecting. A fascinating experience.
OH! My friend Alison at work got me the most awesomest birthday presents! A desktop dartboard! So I can continue to perfect my darts skills! I've wanted one for a long time. And it's really nice! :D AND she got me a little, well, this exact magnetic sculpture thing - you can arrange the little stars and moons however you like and it's incredibly fun. They're fantastic presents, I'm very impressed with her gift-buying skills!
And Katie got me all sorts of awesome I don't know what in Berlin that she will give me on Saturday, so basically, fabulous week-long birthday!
Also I've been watching Shep Smith videos on youtube a bit. ::coos::

Date: 2009-07-24 04:27 pm (UTC)Also - I haven't read the neverending story, but multicoloured text you say? I will have to pick it up now. I'm a big fan of all the movies, and I had a crush on Atreyu when I was little. I think I still have a crush on him (he's lovely now).

Date: 2009-07-24 04:47 pm (UTC)And yes, multicolored text! Not, like, sparkly rainbow words. Part of the book is in red and part is in green. The paperback copy I got did not have this, though! So make sure you get a good edition. It's quite magical and lovely. I highly recommend the book - although I do suspect that it's a book where it's good if your first reading is at a younger age? Maybe just me though - I was more imaginative back then.
I also have a crush on Atreyu, in both movie and text form. Although in the movie really my biggest crushing was on the Childlike Empress. In the book it's definitely Atreyu, he is so freaking awesome and cool and awesome.
I used to have an AURYN icon, I wish I still did!

Date: 2009-07-24 05:19 pm (UTC)I'll get typing up my post. I suppose I do have very limited interests, but that's only because they cover a lot of bases. If I put 'video games' for example, it means I don't have to write ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Psychonauts, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, Sam and Max hit the road, Vibribbon, Disgaea, Final Fantasy 3, 6, 7, 9 and 12, various incarnations of The Sims, Galactic Civilizations II, Age of Empires I & II, Persona 4, Neverwinter Nights, Warcraft, Bioshock, We ♥ Katamari, Transport Tycoon, Theme Park, Dungeons and Dragons Online, World of Warcraft, EVE Online...I could go on, you know?

Date: 2009-07-24 06:10 pm (UTC)That's. . . that's a lot of video games. XD I just NEED to let people know, like, exactly what comics I'm into at a given time, stuff like that. So I shift my interests around a bit.

Hey, is everything okay with Tom?

Date: 2009-07-28 08:40 pm (UTC)Yeah, Tom is fine.. he had called up to me saying "Susan, I need to go to the hospital! Can you drive?" So of course I took this as something terrible had happened? Apparently he just had to be there for a 4am procedure on his leg.
