OHHHHHH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!!
Oh my god!
Evan won! AND PLUSHENKO GOT SILVER! OH MY GOD. EVAN GOT GOLD! Sooooo happy for him, so happy for skating!
By the way, this was supposed to be posted yesterday morning, when it would have made sense for me to still be stunned and excited. XD But I was SO FUCKING TIRED and out of it and sickly all day yesterday. . . the men's competition was almost literally killing me. XD
Evan was amazing. I'm not the biggest fan of his skating, but the power and confidence and skill that he brought to the ice for both skates was exceptional. They were talking about how much he trains, the fact that he runs through the program four times a day - that is amazing. No one does that. And it really, really showed. We were saying, as we were watching it, that you could really feel the confidence behind his skating. He knew what he was doing and he knew that he was able to do it. As a spectator, there was a sense of security.
Also, at the end his hair broke free from the hair-helmet and was sticking up as he spun and it was HILARIOUS.
So there's been a lot of discussion of the scores, and Plushenko has been whining like a big ugly stupid baby that he should have gold and he was robbed. Plushenko, I don't think you're musical or expressive at all. But that is not where you lost this Olympics. Lysacek and Plushenko tied in the program component scores. They all but tied in the technical element baseline. Evan pulled two points out of his grade of execution bonuses. Plushenko did not have good quality skating on Thursday. Evan did.
So if you want to say that the difficulty levels should have been higher for Plushenko's program, or that the quad should be given more points, that's one thing. But he knew how the judging worked going in, and the judges marked meticulously according to the system, and it is obvious that the marks are appropriate.
Anyway, now all I have to stress about is Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir in the ice dance. Tragically, my nails are too short to bite. They did fantastically last night and are second after the compulsory dance. This sets them up well. I believe Domnina and Shabalin, who are in first after the compulsory dance, are less likley to be quite as strong in the original dance and free dance. Meryl Davis and Charlie White are just a point or so behind Tessa and Scott, but at least there's a little cushion because as the season has been going, Meryl and Charlie are likely to get higher scores in the original, and Tessa and Scott higher scores in the free. What Tessa and Scott need to do now is minimize that gap in the original and then just be as beautiful and precise as they always are in the free dance. :D
I'm dying at my inability to watch ctv video clips. :( Even on youtube, I can't watch the videos on their channel. So depressing. So many Team Canada Olympics moments that I am missing! The figure skating ones will be within my grasp eventually but Jon Montgomery's crazy antics are not! (Btw, he is a car salesman. I LOVE when Olympians have day jobs. Love it so hard.)
Although to be fair I can't get the videos on NBC's website to work either. So many curling highlights clips to watch!
Because, oh yeah, we've all gotten totally into curling over here. And when I say "we all" I mean my sister Katie. Oh man, she is crazy go nuts about curling! XDD And it's so sad because both US teams are adorable and they are the only thing where we're really rooting for Team USA, and they're doing NOT WELL AT ALL. At least both of them (men and women) have had wins at this point but it has been rough going and they were just completely losing every game for a while. ::sigh:: We still love them, though. And the games have been close, they haven't been steamrolled or anything. Go USA Curling! You guys are awesome!!
Of course, Team Canada curling is pretty dominant. XD But we can't watch their matches!!
It's Americagasm night again, which is my new name for when any combination of Vonn, Davis, and Ohno compete. Bonus for White (although he only had one day) and Miller. I like short track, but after the one gold medal I'm less invested in the speedskating, even though Davis is my favorite of the three, and I'm kind of done with alpine skiing events. Not enough Canadians, for one thing. (Alpine skiing being downhill, slalom/giant slalom, and any combination of the two, I believe.) [Edit: "Americagasm" might also be an appropriate name for the brakeman of one of the US two-man bobsled teams. Let me put it this way. . . they quickly zoomed in to be above the waist. Spandex is awesome.]
Edit, 10:17PM - MARY CARILLO TALKING ABOUT MOUNTIES!! I LOVE MARY CARILLO! And Mounties!
