Olympics update
Feb. 16th, 2010 10:06 amOh my god, the Olympics are killing me! So stressful! I've resolved to care much less about the men's singles because the pairs event was just so stressful. But I know I'm going to have to care for the ice dance. But ice dance is less stressful, I think, because it's easier for the skaters to be consistent and definitely easier for them to skate clean (not that they aren't doing risky moves as well, but a bit different).
But rooting for Canada has just been so stressful, because there's so much pressure to win gold medals that silver and bronze are really disappointing. I thought I was distressed about Jen Heil and the women's moguls, I am devastated by what happened to Mike Robertson at the snowboard cross. HEARTBREAKING. Thank god for Alex Bilodeau, because if that had happened when Canada still hadn't won a home gold I would have been sobbing. It would have been so lovely, though. And he had an absolutely amazing race! And then fucking Seth Wescott comes in from behind at the last fucking second, and it was so close! SO CLOSE! Aaaaaaaagh, it's killing me. And Wescott already has a gold medal. Asshole. So deeply, deeply disappointing.
However. Shen and Zhao won the gold medal. At long last! They didn't have a perfect free skate but it was still amazing, and I am so happy for them. They came out of retirement to win the Olympic gold medal, and it would have been so heartbreaking if they hadn't been able to do so. I adore them! And their skating! I'm SO RELIEVED! I wanted them to win so freaking bad, I was just flipping out. Katie and I were so tense. Luckily we had acquired Canadian import beer (Molson Canadian, chosen for the red and white label and maple leaves) so that helped a little bit. But not much. Hahahaha oh my god. And they're so cute! And so in love! And so happy! :D YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! I need to just think about their gold medal, because no matter what else happens at this Olympics, that will be awesome.
The second ranked Russian team skated to Love Story, which is what Jamie Sale and David Pelletier (my favorite pairs team) won gold with in 2002, with a heart-stoppingly beautiful and perfect skate. HUUUUUUUUGE mistake to use that for your long program in the year of the Olympics in Canada. Hahahaha, one of my favorite Olympics moments so far was NBC's shot of Jamie and David looking incredibly NOT AMUSED after they finished their long program. XD [Edit: apparently Jamie and David were very supportive of the Russian team and we just saw them during some down time, but it was still funny. It's good that they approved because apparently the team loves Jamie and David and did it as a tribute. ^_^]
Of course, that could be because EVERYONE was falling and it was INSANE. The silver medal team, Pang and Tong (who I'm also REALLY happy for) were the ONLY team to skate clean in the long program. That we saw, at least, which was the top 10 teams or so. Even Shen and Zhao had a weird mistake on a lift.
Other favorite Olympic moment: Alexandre Bilodeau's girlfriend (one hopes) launching on him into some serious smooching the INSTANT he finished an interview. XDD ADORABLE. It was like "'Thanks for talking to us, Alex' - NOMNOMSMOOCHSMOOCHNOM" She appeared out of nowhere. XD
