Apr. 10th, 2009 08:45 amI'm writing this because I think all people deserve to be treated equally, that all people deserve to be treated with respect, treated as human beings, and to be able to make choices about how to live their life. I don't think people should be forced or expected to behave a certain way because of their gender. And I certainly don't think it's right for women to be objectified and viewed as pleasure objects that exist only for men and to be valued only for their bodies and appearance and what they can do for men. I think that's wrong, no matter what culture it is happening in.
I think that reinforcing the idea that women exist to please men, to marry men, to make men happy and to bring men's children into the world is extremely harmful. I don't think it's good for anyone, but I think it's particularly harmful in the way it makes women think about themselves, and the way it teaches men to think about women. Additionally, the tendency to view women as objects rather than people, to perpetuate negative stereotypes and to emphasize the role of women's bodies in their identities - I think these are major factors in encouraging violence against women.
These ideas lead me to believe that the way women are portrayed by and viewed in the media is very important and can be extremely harmful. It's not just words and talking. It has a widespread impact on the way people think about themselves and the way they think about other people, and therefore it affects the way they act.
( basic assumptions established, time to get into JE )
