Loch Lyme Lodge Goodness
Jul. 15th, 2003 01:47 pmI started this entry at 9:30 Monday morning. . . but then Katie came and kicked me off before I could finish it.
Am kind of itching to read The Ropemaker but I also think that now would be a good time to write an entry :) Well, maybe good is an exaggeration, as I'm still a bit fuzzy from sleep. But I want to write, so nyar.
Vacation was just spectacular. Everything about it was wonderful. Well, pretty much. lol. There were a couple problems. I slept oddly--I woke up a lot in the middle of the night. This is partially due to the fact that my mattress was funky, and partly because my grandpa wakes up at 6-ish and sometimes brings other people with him (he's hard of hearing so he can't tell if he's being loud). Another problem was the insects, but I actually got a lot cooler and calmer around insects than I usually am, so hopefully this is an attitude that I'll be able to keep with me. Nonetheless, I've developed a severe loathing for moths. I also had a horrible nightmare about this evil beetle thing that attacked me, and it gave me the heebie-jeebies for day! Ugh! It was awful! And there were a couple of other things, a couple days that weren't so great, but for the most part, things were just awesome :D
For one thing, for the first week and a half or so, we had perfect weather. Even though it got kinda icky towards the end, it was still the best weather we've ever had, I think. I swam every single day (although that took a little bit of work on my part, but I'll get to it later). Most days, I brought a bag full of stuff down to the beach, and then just sat on a towel and chilled and read and even slept. I drew a little, too--I have a couple of drawings that I like, and a whole bunch of really quick sketches of people (like, 30 second sketches. I drew anyone who stayed still long enough, but I still had to hurry). When we got hot, me and mom would go swimming, and sometimes Katie joined us. She brought a noodle, because she's not too strong a swimmer and this year me and mom were just kind of swimming out and chilling. Like, I didn't go on the dock (the big square one that's out in 12 feet of water, where people usually jump off and stuff) at all this vacation. We would just kind of swim and then backfloat and relax. It was a great year for swimming not just because of the weather (which I can't get over how cream your pants good it was) but also because there weren't any powerboats! Actually, maybe once or twice I saw a powerboat. No biggie. Last year it was a problem. And the lake is really too small for powerboats, it's silly. So no worries there, it was lovely.
I just really relaxed a lot. I felt really good. If it wasn't too hot, we played badminton, and went for walks, and the swimming alone means I got more exercise than normal--which shows me two things. 1) I want to spend less time on the computer and more time relaxing and reading--maybe outside. 2) I need to do other stuff outside (active stuff). Like take walks--me and mom played badminton yesterday, it was fun. So I plan to do that. I already told myself I can't read any fanfiction today. Instead, Ropemaker. :) I don't know. Just having so much time just to chill was really fun, and I feel extremely refreshed. I want to hold on to that feeling.
I discovered something fun. I really like to hum. I went down to the lake early one morning, and it was so peaceful, I just started to hum. I started out slowly, holding notes a really long time, and then it kind of became a song. It's extremely relaxing. :) I was doing it last night, actually. I like to start slow and build up to a tune, and then let the tune slow down and stop.
I also did several things that I've wanted to do for a really long time. One of them since I was a kid, and one since, ehh. . . a couple years ago, i guess. lol.
I'm not sure what order to put them in. O.o
( exploits )
( accomplishment )
The fact that I swam every day actually took some doing. And was a bit surprising. Monday I almost didn't! In the morning I was sleeping, then in the afternoon it was icky. Luckily, my skinny-dipping took place before midnight! So my parents don't know about that one ;) But Friday was another crazy thing that I ended up doing so I could swim every day, and they know about that. Friday was cold! Normally, I'll swim even when it's not chilly, hence all the other days. But on Friday we were all wearing long pants and sweatshirts and we had a fire on all day (sometimes we'll have a fire in the morning and then it warms up. That doesn't happen on Long Island. . . it's just hot. A little cooler when the sun's down, but we dont' get those night cool nights to provide a little change. It's been nice since we've been back though) and it was cold! But I swam anyway--very briefly. And Katie was waiting with my towel and then we ran back to the cabin! lol.
But I did it! Every day for two weeks! Wahey!!
( reading )
There's a comic book store in Lebanon, NH. . . or Lebanon, VT? I get confused. We're right near the border, like, 5 minutes away from Vermont, so I lose track of what state we're in. I'm used to Long Island! No other states. [augh! mailman! must go see if AP scores arrived! . . . . . . . . . . . . .] [it was all either magazines or college mail. curses!!] Anyway, so we got the comic books for the two weeks we were up there, and several other notable purchases!1
1) Issue #13 of Paradise Too! I don't know why I hadn't bought that before. It was excellent. So now we need to get the other twelve. 14 is the last issue. This one was full of sketches, and I inked one of them, so i'll scan it and show you guys. It had a lot of cute and funny stuff in it, too; I ended up reading and rereading it a lot.
2) Cute little graphic novel about Zatanna (It's called Everyday Magic). My AIM name is ZatannaZatarra, btw. Her name is Zatanna Zatara. Oops! Dad wouldn't let me look it up! DX lol. Oh well. Anyway, the story was cute, and I'm very, very fond of Zatanna, so it was fun. And John Constantine was in there! Yay!
3) There's a new title, "Formerly the Justice League". It was very cute and funny and silly, but noooo! Not the Maxwell Lord League again! lol. I felt bad for Blue Beetle, too, if anyone's read it.
4) Dad got a collection of the earlier books in the Orion title, which has been cancelled. By Walter Simonson. I think I started reading it after he came to earth and all, but I really, really enjoyed it. ::sigh:: So I'm going to read this one. Nifty art, too.
5) The Flash: Race Against Time! :D We have, like, every Flash collection--this fills in one of the only gaps we had, I think XD Like, Terminal Velocity, Return of Barry Allen, Reckess Youth (some Flash, mainly Impulse), Dead Heat, etc. . . can I just say Mark Waid totally kicks ass? Anyway, I think we have pretty much everything now XD I'm goign to go and read them all in order.
6) Most important purchase!! American Dreams!!! It's a JLA tpb, issues 5-8 I think, or 5-10? Ah. 5-9. It's from the Grant Morrison/Howard Porter/John Dell creative team, which I love. Even if the stories are weird, they're soooo well-written, and the art is cream your pants good!! It takes place right after New World Order, another good one.
But that's not the only reason I'm estatic to get this. About five years ago, when we were at Loch Lyme, actually, I began to read comic books (i think I'd run out of things to do). But dad only had some of those golden age reprints and a strange book about Manhunter. And not the Martian Manhunter. So I read those, and when we got back, me and Katie wanted to read more. Wow, this is really taking me back. Neither of our parents wanted us to read comics, because mom doesn't really like them, and dad didn't want to get mom upset. So we would take them kind of secretly from their room, and American Dreams was probably the first one we ended up with. I think it was the first, like, real comic that I read. Back when we only had a few comics, me and Katie would read them over and over, and know them really well, and talk about them--I remember reciting lines from American Dreams to Katie, like, we'd start saying them to each other in school (this happened in a big way with Mousebusters, but nevermind. . .) and all. I love that comic. And then we started to get more and more, and some of the first ones we read got forgotten. And then I remembered American Dreams, and I hadn't seen it in a long time. And I've been cleaning up and looking for it and I haven't been able to find it! And I could barely remember it, I just remembered that it was one of the first ones we ever got and I loved it! I'm pretty sure we're not going to find our original copy. I was soooo happy when Katie showed it to me!! Dad didn't want to get it but we're not going to find the other one! Well, maybe we will now that we've bought it, but I don't care!! XD
Reading it again was sooo much fun. I enjoyed it immensely for itself, and it also took me back--it was awesome. It's a great comic. Amazing. I love it :D I'm so, so happy that we've got it again!!
We also bought various other cool things. I got an awesome Life Is Good tote bag, and cool boots (they gave me blisters--must wear band-aids.) and me and Katie and dad all got Loch Lyme t-shirts, and we bought mike one, too. I also got gifts for Perin and Emily, but they kind of match, so I'd like to give them their gifts together, except it seems like I won't be able to see them at the same time for ever! In fact, I haven't spoken to Perin at all since I got back, and Emily only once. I'm very sad, I missed them. Emily is busy every day this week--I mean, every evening, she's working during the day, and Perin is going to Penn apparently every weekend. XP ::sighs:: Oh dear. I wanted to have them sleep over this friday cos it's our birthday on thursday (we turn 17 on the 17th! ;) but she's going to be gone. ::frowns:: I want to see them, and I want to have a sleepover. I hope we can make this work. [i've been getting bursts of insecurity more often lately. . . but I know Katie loves me, which is important!!]
( vacation business )
One of the very coolest things about this vacation was all the time I got to spend with my family. The other cool thing was all the time I spent by myself, chilling, but it was great being with Katie and my parents :D My grandpa came to, and he's great, but we're not that close because he's hard of hearing and I talk quietly. ::winces:: But anyway, well, me and Katie are always close, but I got to spend a lot of time with both parents. Mom and I both like to do the outside stuff, so we'd swim together, and hang out on the beach together, and play badminton and all that. And dad likes to drive around, and Katie went with him a lot, but I also went quite a bit, shopping and all that stuff. And it's a lot of fun to be able to talk to dad and see the beautiful scenery. I'm actually very lucky that I'm quite close with both of my parents. I talk with dad a lot, even when we're home. He spends a lot of time in the basement and I go down and say hi to him. :D So I had a really good time hanging out with both of them. And we'd play trivial pursuit and stuff as a family, and it was loads of fun. Just. . . excellent. Much love :D I think that it's one of the main reasons why this vacation made me feel so good. I read this book, Children of Eve by Kevin Casey. I forgot to mention that in the book section. I went to Playwood, which is this little cabin with all bookshelves and couches and a TV (but the VCR broke) and a ping-pong table and stuff, and looked through the books, and I saw that. And I ended up just reading the whole thing that morning--it was short. And it was about homeless children in American cities (mainly 16-19 year olds) only it was extremely fascinating cos each chapter was like, about a different kid. Anyway, some of the stories about how the kids ended up where they were really made me. . . I don't know. Appreciate seems too small a word. And lucky seems to small a word. So some combination of super-lucky and super-appreciative of my parents. I asked my mom, and she promises not to kick me out if I tell her I'm gay. In fact, she said she probably wouldn't kick me out if I had, like, committed a crime or something. Which I won't. But I have great parents, and I love my family. So, yeah.
Oh, by the way! I found this website: http://www.lochlymelodge.com/ Put together by the oldest son of the family who runs it (there are only two sons, though--JP, who's going to be a senior in college, and Josh, who's about a year younger than me. We used to be friends with Josh when we were little. I remember playing house with him and stuff. lol.) and it's pretty nifty. It has pictures and information, and all. No pictures of my cabin, though. But if you look at the pine tree that's right behind the umbrella in this picture: http://www.lochlymelodge.com/sphotos/2.html there's a path just behind it, that goes off to the left. And that leads to my cabin. I say "my"--I mean Balsam, where we stayed. katie has pictures ^_^ There are the three Lakeside cabins, and all the others, and the Lodge and everything, are across Route 10.
This is the view that shows where I swam best: http://www.lochlymelodge.com/fphotos/3.html
That picture is from fall, so i guess all the lawn chairs are gone! I've never been there in fall, but this is the beach, I believe (or waterfront, whatever), and then I swam to Alligator Cove, which you can see as the long area on the other side of the lake where you can see the rock--Alligator Cove is behind that, although I actually swam to the right edge of those rocks. Straight up from those bannisters that you can see on the beach, and slightly to the left.
( sunday/monday )
OK. I must go eat, and then possibly play badminton with mom before she goes to work. Mom, btw, is a Dar Williams fan! Yay! (oh, and dad is reading the Fifth Elephant, a discworld book! :D) Then I think I'll shower. Kerrist, it's 3:30! O_O Oops. . .
